Boys boat trip

By Andrew Tunney

Matt wanted to go fishing in the boat yesterday, so I readied the boat and we headed down to Bluewater boat ramp.  Mat in the past, has not liked the boat due to the sound made when it pushed off the sand, and wanted to go home.  This time he enjoyed the push off and once we got the motor started, we cruised up the marina and headed up a creek where we decided to stop for a fish.

After spending about 20 minutes, Matt go a bit bored and although we had a few good bits to start with, we had some good bites to start with but they ceased after a while so we decided to go out the front and have a look there.

We anchored up out the front of Yorky’s Knob and threw in back towards the rock wall; previously I had caught Mangrove Jacks and Blue Salmon so it was a reasonable chance that Matt may get something.  Admittedly, I had only ever caught fish here in the early morning, you can catch sharks here at pretty much anytime; while frustrating, they do provide good sport all the same.

After about 15 minutes my line showed some activity and a few seconds later, I was on.  The fish was a small one but was putting up a decent fight all the same.  Then it came up to the surface, it was a small black tip shark.

That was about the end of the fishing action and Matt asked to go home; I asked him if he wanted to go for a run to Double Island.   He said no as he was scared given there had been a few larger boats made the boat rock due to their wash that went past us, so I said that we would go out to the next set of markers and then go home.

He was happy with this and then we headed off eventually up to half speed on the motor, and his worry changed to a broad smile.  The kid is a speed demon :-) !!!

We got to just under half way to Double Island before Matt asked to go home again, so rather than push it, I decided to turn around and head for home.

Matt enjoyed his day out on the water and the conditions were nice and calm for him to get out of the creeks and out in the open water which he enjoyed.  I reckon that he will be keen to go out again next chance that he gets when the water is calm :-)
