A busy day…

Posted by: Andrew Tunney | Comments (2)

Well, as noted yesterday, I took Matt fishing at the mouth of the Barron River this morning.

We left pretty much on time at 7:30am and got there a bit before 8:00am and although  the fish weren’t biting, we did have a good time (mental note, never again buy Instant Bait unless in the boat and have berley as well).  Matt had a good time playing with a stick drawing in the sand while the sand spike held his rod – I doubt that we had any bites beyond 1 or 2, still it was a good morning despite me ruing not having the boat to do a drift over the sand banks…

Not to worry however as I’ve got this coming Saturday night penciled in for an ‘overnighter’ and there will be crab pots and lots of bait available.  Check the picture of Matt with his new fishing rod below as the car park all decked out in North Queensland certified fishing attire:

After getting home, we cleaned out the fish tank, did some washing and then mowed the back yard; man it is getting dry here – bring on the wet season; I don’t think that I’ve ever inhaled so much dust when cutting the grass :-(

To top it off, I found that the mower (which is close to 20 years old) will finally need t be replaced, it has a leak in the fuel tank; going to go with Matt to look at new 2 stroke ones over the next two weeks.  If nothing else I need to have a two stroke mower to use any old boat fuel up :-)

Cleaning the fish tank took a while to complete, completely drained the tank and filtered the stones and gave the coral feature a good blast with the hose to clean it up and then re-filled and cleaned the filter again before returning the fish to their home.  The tank looks much better for the effort and I’m sure that the fish appreciate it!

Dinner was barbecued sausages for the kids and two pieces of rump steak for Jacinda and myself with fried onions an mushrooms; washed down with a bottle of red wine – damn fine if I do say so myself!

Now, where did that weekend go?

BCF Club Night – Cairns

Posted by: Andrew Tunney | Comments (0)

BCF Cairns held it’s first club night last night featuring Scott Hillier from channel 7′s Creek To Coast.

The evening started with Scott handing out a couple of hats to people (that’s the last time that I wear a hat to a BCF club night – I couldn’t get one! ). There were lots of specials on in store and I picked up a new shirt reduced by $15 and also a spool of 137m 30lb Cajun fishing braid for $14.98.

There were freebies too; there were free coke, diet coke and coke zero for everyone out of a big esky, and a free sausage sizzle which ran from prior to 6:00pm to well after 8:00pm at least.

Scott began his first presentation of the night; how to catch big Large Mouth Nannygai and Red Emperor.
Lots of good advice and good humour in his presentation. Then there was a break of about an hour, which I spent wandering around the shop cursing that it was so close to payday :-)

I did get to speak to Trevor, BCF Cairns’ resident tournament fisherman whose experience includes winning several Barra tournaments and several years as a Territory fishing guide. He was rigging up and showing people how to rig soft plastics for Barra and how to tie knots linking braid to leader; lots of good advice there and Trevor just loves talking to people about fishing.

I managed to speak to Scott about the spot he spoke of off Arlington Reef for Nannygai; he gave me a mark so that will be something to check out the next time I get out on a calm day as the boat should be able to get to where he advised on a calm day on a single tank of fuel :-)

At 8:20pm, Scott began his talk on catching Winter Barra. Which I will try to target specifically this yea; he imparted some really good advice on how the fish school up in snags at that time of year and the type of rigs to use and the best bait for success.

All up, it was a great night and I definitely will be going to the next one, once Matt is about 5 or close to it, he’ll enjoy them too. I encourage everyone who has an opportunity to attend one of these nights to go, you won’t be disappointed.
